Choosing the right side of the Loggia
The Loggia at Villa Monastero has two very different sides. One looks toward the gardens and the village of Varenna — lush, layered, but full of tourists behind the couple. The other opens directly onto the lake — wide, panoramic, and quietly breathtaking.
Jay chose the lake-facing side. It was the right call.

What overcast light does for a proposal
The shoot was in August, at the hour that is usually golden hour. But that evening the sky was covered — soft, even, completely diffused.

Overcast light at the end of the day behaves like a natural softbox: it wraps around your subjects, eliminates harsh shadows, and gives skin and fabric a quality that direct sun rarely produces. Jay and Jialin’s light, neutral tones were perfectly suited to this light. Nothing competed. Everything held together.

What stayed with us, looking back at these images, is how present they both were. No distraction, no performance — just two people sharing a moment that belonged entirely to them. The soft, enveloping light made everything feel suspended, almost cinematic. Like a scene you would want to watch twice.
